Camel Racing - Yes!

First brought to Northaw in 2011. We race again next year on 25th May 2015. Camel owners can provide their own jockeys, but NOT us! We provide our own. We share the profits with The Herts Air Ambulance and look for jockeys prepared to raise sponsorship. Go on - have a go!

Monday’s (2nd May 2016) Point-to-Point at Northaw

A poor weather forecast cost us dearly on 2nd May ; OK it wasn’t the warmest of days but it was dry

Gate was down a good 50%

Team Northaw , led by Douglas Pirie, did so well getting the course fit for racing after the wettest winter on record and also more annoying MotorCycle events

The Going was much softer than usual BUT we avoided abandonment , which was on the cards at one point ,and there were no Walk-Overs

Well done to Owners , Trainers and Jockeys for braving the ground

Usual good selection of Bookies and a busy Tote

Wonderful hillside parking looking over the course

Full and excellent catering facilities , inc a Licensed Bar

Usual emergency facilities on standby, None of which were needed ; 3 Doctors, Vets and a Full Paramedic Team inc road and 4x4 ambulances

Farrier and mobile water bowser complemented the teams

A chilly day cut the gate by appx 1/3rd but it was dry for those who turned out

Camels raced well with our own jockeys aboard  : No falls this year

Race your own dogs down the scurry provided much mirth for people and their pets !

Huntsman worked hard racing his hounds over 4 jumps

Shetlands again looked brilliant and raced well

The traditional Fun Fair was enjoyed by thousands

The Bookie was busy !

A good day was had by all.

To be repeated on 29 May 2017, with some better supporting racing , Yet to be divulged !  NOTE THE DATE !

enfield chace pointtopoint1The Enfield Chace NORTHAW RACES have been in existence on our Northaw site since the 1930s when the then Prince of Wales rode in one of the races!  After the 2nd World War we moved to a different course returning to Northaw in 1968.  More history of Northaw Races.

Point-to-Point racing is run under strict Jockey Club ruling by The Point-to-Point Authority (PPA).  The PPA stipulate that entry charges are to be per person with cars free and children U14 free. Each horse has to qualify by hunting 3 times with with a pack. Meetings are held throughout The UK with one meeting per year per Hunt.  The season now runs from mid November to late May. We secured The First May Day Bank Holiday Monday date.

The races involve Race-Horses racing over a 3 mile course with 18 birch fences, 1.3 metres high and 2.5 metre spread.  An Open Ditch setup is included too.
We will always put on 6 races, sometimes having to divide where declared numbers exceed our safety factor of 16. We are an officially appointed Pony Racing Championship course and this year we had 4 pony races in addition to the Point-to-Pointers: these always provide very good sport!
Amongst other well renowned riders, We had The Two Andrews sisters racing this year, both having won at Cheltenham earlier in the year.

The course preparation is meticulously overseen by our Chairman and Clerk of The Course, Douglas Pirie, himself once a jockey.  Under enfield chace pointtopoint2Douglas, Team Northaw produce a much-admired and exciting course.  David Ringer, our resident BHA Course Inspector and also The UK's Chief Course Inspector, Richard Linley are always very congratulatory.

Viewing is idyllic, on a hillside with spectacular views of most of the course and the wonderful countryside: Northaw Church is rather a special backdrop.  Over the last decade hard ground has been a problem; A problem suitably addressed by The Committee and our resident Contractor Alan Fitzjohn has enlarged our pond, more of a lake now, to hold near 100,000 gallons which we can spread over the course in days leading up to the event.

Bookies and The Tote in attendance.  There are always a good range of quality Trade Stands and children's sideshows; A Saville Row tailor declared a suit bought from Embassy as excellent ; The purchaser has since approached the trader and bought two more!

We are always willing and indeed keen to hear constructive comments on our running of The Point-to-Point at Northaw.
