Camel Racing - Yes!
First brought to Northaw in 2011. Camel owners can provide their own jockeys, but NOT us! We provide our own. We share the profits with The Herts Air Ambulance and look for jockeys prepared to raise sponsorship. Go on - have a go! On the day we shall also have Hound Racing, Shetland Pony Racing, Bring-your-own-Dog racing. Bookies will be in attendance. Refreshments. There will be some side-shows and a Trade Stands. We will have a Big Wheel and Helter Skelter along. The fun starts around midday with last race around 5pm.

The Enfield Chace NORTHAW RACES have been in existence on our Northaw site since the 1930s when the then Prince of Wales rode in one of the races! After the 2nd World War we moved to a different course returning to Northaw in 1968. More history of Northaw Races.
Point-to-Point racing is run under strict Jockey Club ruling by The Point-to-Point Authority (PPA). The PPA stipulate that entry charges are to be per person with cars free and children U14 free. Meetings are held throughout The UK with one meeting per year per Hunt. The season now runs from mid November to late May. We secured The First May Day Bank Holiday Monday date. |
The races involve Race-Horses racing over a 3 mile course with 18 birch fences, 1.3 metres high and 2.5 metre spread. An Open Ditch setup is included too.
We will always put on 6 races, sometimes having to divide where declared numbers exceed our safety factor of 16. We are an officially appointed Pony Racing Championship course for East Anglia .

The course preparation is meticulously overseen by our Chairman and Clerk of The Course, Douglas Pirie, himself once a jockey.
Under Douglas, Team Northaw produce a much-admired and exciting course. David Ringer, our resident BHA Course Inspector and also The UK's Chief Course Inspector, Richard Linley are always very congratulatory.
Viewing is idyllic, on a hillside with spectacular views of most of the course and the wonderful countryside: Northaw Church is rather a special backdrop. Over the last decade hard ground has been a problem; A problem suitably addressed by The Committee and our resident Contractor Alan Fitzjohn has enlarged our pond, more of a lake now, to hold near 100,000 gallons which we can spread over the course in days leading up to the event.

Bookies in attendance. There are always a good range of quality Trade Stands and children's sideshows; A Saville Row tailor declared a suit bought from Embassy as excellent ; The purchaser has since approached the trader and bought two more!
